It seems that nearly everybody is in favor of a new map sometime soon in either the snapshots or in the 1.8 official release. An idea for the new map as been suggested which is to copy MindCrack and start out in a very small space and use an expanding world border. In this thread, I am going to state my opinions on this idea and welcome others to do the same.
I do not think using the 1.8 world border will be a good idea. MindCrack is using it because they all wanted to be closer together and have more collaboration. They are able to achieve that because they are all a close group of guys who have known each other for a long time. They all have similar goals relating to Youtube and are able to generally agree with each other on major decisions.
Realm of Reckoning is not the same as MindCrack. We are an extremely large diverse group of people. Some of us are active in a Skype chat, while others of us have it muted because all it is is spam. The suggested starting size for the world border is 800 x 800 - a map size where you can run from edge to edge in 2 minutes. I cannot possibly imagine 40+ players all getting along and sharing such a small map. It was hard enough to have enough space with this map (4000 x 4000) where you had birch railroads invading your city and children running around getting flint & steel happy.
I have only been on the server for 1 month, but I have seen a lot of collaboration between players on this map. I love the idea of towns where groups of players can build together and make large areas that one person couldn't handle alone. I do not see any PURPOSE of forcing players to play in a map 25 times smaller than what we currently have. Towns would be way too close together and you wouldn't be able to look out your window without seeing numerous other builds that may or not look good.
It is normal for humans to be selfish. So how long do you think the glowstone and quartz will be around? Good luck trying to ever find some because whoever gets to the nether first gets all of it. Suddenly a survival multiplayer server has turned into getting the most valuable resources first or else you will never see them again. Sand is another resource that will be in short supply. Good luck trying to find some that isn't in somebody's backyard.
I keep hearing people talk about finding a perfect seed for this type of map. I will admit, MindCrack did a pretty good job at finding one. I am surprised they got all 6 saplings within a 500 x 500 area. But finding a seed with ALL of the biomes within a 800 x 800 area is going to be near impossible. With 1.7 biome generation, there are different classes of biomes with different climates. This makes finding the hot, neutral, and cold biomes all next to each other incredibly difficult. Do you think you are going to have a Mesa, Mega Taiga, Jungle, Ice Spikes, and Flower Forest any time soon? You will be lucky to get 1 or 2 in a 800 x 800 space in addition to all of the other standard biomes. I don't like the idea of being forced to live in whatever biomes spawn has. Mojang has done a lot to encourage exploring by adding so many biomes. You won't be exploring if you can travel across the whole map in 2 minutes so your dream of finding the Ice Spikes (Chris) may never come true.
1.8 also adds the new underwater dungeons. MindCrack's border has been expanding for a month now and they haven't even found one in their "perfect" seed. These new structures are incredible and the guardians are really cool mobs. If we use the 1.8 world border, you will not be able to go out and explore and find yourself an underwater dungeon to get the new blocks. Or when one does appear, everybody will tear it apart right away.
Privacy is also a concern with using a map so small. I know that several players would prefer to go out a couple thousand blocks where they won't be disturbed. You may tell them to go play in a single player world instead, but wanting to build by yourself away from everybody does not mean you want to play single player. You will still want to have players visit you from time to time and go back to spawn town, and visit other players, etc.
I do understand the concern of spawn town not being as populated if we don't have a world border. However, we do not need a world border forcing players to build at spawn if they don't want to. Players will still want to build shops and community builds at spawn even without a world border.
Basically, what I am trying to get at, is that there are so many restrictions with the 1.8 world border it doesn't seem worth it. There aren't too many benefits and just a lot of features in Minecraft we will no longer have access to because we aren't allowed to leave the confined space we are being forced to live in. Minecraft is infinite. You can always go exploring to find new land and materials and you shouldn't have to worry about some glowing lines in your way stopping you from taking full advantage of the game.
