During the server I brought up an idea that when we open shops or whatnot, we should make an Money Currency for the prices at the shops.
Blah Blah Blah We couldn't decide so I made this post.
Also IF we pick the ores. Should it be in blocks or ingots.

We used to have a currency on the old server where it was just gold. Gold everything. It seemed to work alright but I wasn't on too long during that time to tell properly. People stopped using it eventually except for Kent who used them for horse breeding. The only problem I see with it is gold farming, but even that takes a while to do unless you make a proper gold farm. If that's taken into consideration then I think gold would be pretty good to use since it's not used for too many things. I wouldnt mind having a currency but sometimes if I need a particular item I want to recieve that item for what I sell.
I say if the player isnt in need of any particular item they can sell their product for say Lapiz and could have the option when in need to sell their product for something else

Currency would be used for shops, or strict purchases. For instance, lets say we choose Obsidian as our currency. Obsidian will start to gain a certain value. So lets say like 10 obsidian = 1 Diamond, or 10 obsidian = 20 Iron. (I used round numbers without thinking of the economy at all for this example so these numbers aren't the real in game value of currency.) If you wanted to trade for Iron for a Diamond, then the server's retail price would be 20 Iron. So lets get unnecessarily complicated with it. If you really want a silk touch book, but you do not have any currency (sticking with Obsidian for this example) you can use the worth of another item to determine the worth of the trade. So you offer 30 Emeralds for the silk touch book. Well, lets say 30 emeralds is only worth 15 obsidian, but a silk touch book is only worth 5 obsidian. By using the established economy we can see that you are severely overpaying for this book. We could go very far into establishing the economy, but really an economy in Minecraft would be hard to maintain because most resources are abundant. Not quite complicated enough? Okay then, one more example! If we wanted a true economy then certain difficult to obtain items would have to be used to base currency on, like for example: 71 Lapis = 64 Obsidian 64 obsidian = 1 diamond block 10 diamond blocks = 1 wither skull 5 wither skulls = 1 wither star 5 wither stars = 1 mob head Everything would have to be compared to a set standard item. Using this example and if we set Obsidian was our base currency, then all currency conversions for obsidian would be multiplied by 1. If Lapis is worth less than Obsidian in our example, then you could measure value by it's current market price. Lets say you have 64 lapis and want to trade it for obsidian, but lapis is worth less. You would multiply the amount of Lapis you want to trade by the market price to find how much obsidian you can afford. In this example we will say Lapis is worth 0.9 to every 1 obsidian. Multiply 64x0.9 to get 57.6. So with 64 Lapis you can only get 57.6 (round to nearest whole number so we'll say 58) Obsidian. If you want to establish a real economy that'd be fine, I wouldn't mind opening a financial mediator shop to ensure fair trades take place (With a fee for a fraction of the transaction of course )

We can't use an easily farmable resource as base currency. Connor7551 told me that on another SMP he plays on that has an Iron farm, 2 stacks of Iron blocks is something like 1 diamond (I can't remember exactly what he said, but I remember the scaling was ridiculous.) Anything that can be farmed, will be farmed and the economy will be compromised.

By farming, I believe Chris is talking about non-renewable resources. Diamonds are non-renewable and what I think will make the best currency since you know....everybody wants it. Who wants lapis?

Diamonds can be mined again, its just hard to get a non-renewable resource.

Diamonds can be mined again, its just hard to get a non-renewable resource. Diamond is still the best, people are almost always trading with diamonds, and it is rare in the mines. It will then be hard work for you to obtain them, it will be like you have a job, ypu go mine and you get paid with diamonds

Diamonds or diamond ore would be something valuable enough to be use as currency imo

I really like the idea of a free trade society. If I want something, I'll offer a trade for something else. Things which are harder to come by are of course considered more valuable and would be traded for more items. On that thought, the currency could be multiple things including lapis, diamonds, etc. some worth more than others, like paper bills vs coins.
